Lister CS finaly running [Nov. 15th, 2009|06:51 pm]
[Current Mood | accomplished]

Me in blue overalls winding engine over

Steven (Scaler) in grey hat

Andy/Snowdog in black shirt

Filmed by my Brother

With still no successful start up after re-timing, we turned to the injector again, taking it apart and cleaning the tiny valve in the tip, by soaking in diesel for about 15 minuets and brushing with scotch-brite, allowed the fuel to properly mist, and not dribble into the cylinder.

First turn after, and it went, hurray!

The compression changeover valve leaks a little as it unscrews itself with the vibration but other than that its runs noisily but steadily.

So now its down to me for cosmetic restoration, starting with that loose rattly rocker cover. (now fixed)

I'l get a better video in the daylight soon.

Almost [Nov. 12th, 2009|02:43 pm]
[Current Mood | determined]

Last weekend saw the Lister CS engine being attempted to start for the first time.

Steven drove his tractor around to my house, with a belt pulley attached to it in order to connect it to the pulley on the CS, which would relive us of the effort of winding it over repeatedly.

After a lot of palaver trying to line the engine up with the tractor to stop the belt slipping off every time we started, we managed to get it turning over at a decent speed, although when we tried to start it, it would not fire.

On inspection the diesel pump was seized up, the tappet could be seen moving, but the plunger was stuck upwards.

So that came off and we free'd off the plunger and put it back, we connected the fuel pump to the injector...

Only to find out the injector was not working too!

So that came off as well, we dissembled it and cleaned it out and put it back, hoping it would work now.

After another round of wrestling with the flat belt we tried again, with me controlling the compression release lever and spraying highly explosive easy start into the inlet.

This time there was a bang and black smoke joined the white cloud of un-burnt diesel now hanging over the driveway.

After that it seemed to want to go, it would fire between 1-5 times on its own fuel (with no easy-start)but it wouldn't keep firing and fell back to white, and by this time it was dark so we called it off and decided that the fuel wasn't being injected at the right time after all our fiddling.

So this weekend its back with the tractor and [info]tyrin_meerkat in tow hopefully, and with now 90-odd pages of Lister CS owners manual we hope to get it timed properly and running, ready for me to strip it all down again and get it looking nice again.

Or maybe I needed the Australian brand easy-start )

Engine build [Oct. 19th, 2009|01:24 am]
[Current Mood | accomplished]

After my dad completed a 4-wheeled trolley for my Lister D, including wheels I saved from the Tilford museum, I set about securing most of the engine together.

Mainly to see if the flywheel was clear of the ground wheels (don't want a suddenly mobile trolley) which it turned out it was fine.

I also wanted to see how much of the engine I could put together and get undercover in order to help prevent rubbish getting into the crankcase, and see the "fruits of labour" so to speak.

Reground the valves again and replaced them in the engine head, although I remember there being 2 caps on the top of the springs where the cotter pins locate, (perhaps similar to snowdog's) I can't find them anywhere.

Using [info]avon_deer 's nifty website he found: according to it, this is the number one single that was around the time I was born.
